The Bletterbach river - a canyon, not as well known as its „big brother“ in America but definitely as worth a visit. In this geologically highly interesting gorge you can see the structure and the history of the Dolomites „live“ – better than any book you might get to read. Because even when the area around Aldino was still on the seaside or even a bit lower (approx. 200 million years ago), there were corals and mussels and Bellerophon-snails working on our big attraction, the Bletterbach canyon. Walking along the river surrounded by rock walls towering at over 20 m height is an unforgettable adventure. Crossing this almost ghostly canyon is a wonderful geologic experience, not only for geologists but also for nature-lovers. |

Three huge layers of rock form this enormous, geologic amphitheatre. On the bottom there is porphyry (a form of quartzite) which is unique in the Alps, a bit higher you find sandstone – a sediment – with coal and gypsum formations and higher up there is dolomite rock (a limestone). And the higher up you walk the more numerous the fossils get. Discover this unique natural spectacle on your own and let the impressions get hold of you. Or join a group and let the guide explain everything about the Bletterbach. From the Lahneralm pasture or Redagno to the Taubenleck, on to the Butterloch to the Gorz and back to the starting point. The Bletterbach museum in Redagno is a must in any case! |
